Attack/Defence Awareness Card: BalancedINFO: Although his physical build was visibly clanky, and his running and moving around the pitch was awkward and a bit clumsy, José Edmílson was a very hardworking player, being one of the most versatile and mobile players from late '90s brazilian football. While playing for São Paulo, Edmilson was mainly a Center Back, sometimes floating between Sweeper and "Volante" roles. Due to his crossing and long passing skills, coaches such as Paulo César Carpegiani went as far as deploying Edmílson by both sides of the pitch, often playing as a Side Back, regularly going up and down the flanks when São Paulo played in a 3-5-2 formation, or even in a 3-4-3. Edmílson moved to Lyon in 2000 and quickly became an important defender, offering good defensive coverage and delivering accurate through-ball passes and lofted balls. He even scored a few long-distance free kicks, striking powerful shots. He was a starter for the Seleção at WC 2002, playing 6 of the 7 matches. He had a fantastic outing against Costa Rica, dominating the left side of the pitch alongside Júnior, creating 1 assist, participating in the play that leaded to Rivaldo's goal and scoring a beautiful overhead goal.
