William "Fatty" Foulke was a goalkeeper known for been the largest footballer ever. He spent almost his entire career for Sheffield United, playing 352 matches from 1894 to 1905. After shorts spell with Chelsea and Bradford City, he retired in 1907. He died nine years later. He capped once for England in 1897. He was renowned mostly for his huge size, especially for that time.
Considered the most bully footballer ever, he was feared because of his size and attitude by opponents, teammates and referees: in the 1902 FA Cup final against Southampton, he was so angry for a goal taken that the referee had to run away and hide inside a locker before Foulke was stopped by some FA officials; because of his unfairness, he used to lower the crossbar − sometimes even breaking it − to limit the shot angle for the opponents; it was said that he used to have some ballboys behind his goal to stand out his size and because he was too lazy and slow to take the balls by himself − sometimes he even talked to them during the matches; Foulke was a charismatic and violent goalkeeper who used to throw around or inside the goal the opponents he didn't like. His attitude forced the FA not to select him for England except in one single occasion. However he didn't have only bad characteristics. He was a fantastic penalty saver − he saved 10 penalty kicks during his season at Chelsea − so he could many fauls inside the box without any problem − considering that cards didn't exist yet − and save all-out penalties, also thanks to the fact that goalkeepers could stay five metres outside of the goal which was almost completely covered by his body; he had the ability to kick the ball − which was really hard back then − the length of the field, being able to transform an action from defensive to attacking; he could also punch the ball as far as some players could kick it; he didn't hesitate to advance from his goal when the defenders didn't do their task; despite his incredible size, he still had a decent agility that made him able even to jump over the cross bar and sit on it but when his weight began to increase more and more his now low agility gave him problems to save low shots. Apparently, he's been the first goalkeeper to score a goal, even though not in an official match: during a friendly match against a South African/Dutch selection, he was so bored in the goal due to the very low level of the opponents; so he decided to leave the goal uncovered to go forward where he scored twice, having fun with passes and dribblings; the opponents even managed to score two goals thanks to Sheffield United's empty goal! There's a curious anecdote referred to a match against Accrington Stanley, played on 2nd Febrary 1907: he and his opponents had the same jersey; therefore Foulke had to wear a huge sheet; he didn't take goals and the expression "clean sheet" was created.
He was so hated that the first ever insulting chant was sung for him:
Who ate all the pies? Who ate all the pies?
You fat ba***rd, You fat ba***rd, You ate all the pies! A video that shows him kicking the ball away Another video that shows him doing the same thing
