INFO:Whelan was an inside-right. He spent his entire though short career at Manchester United, making 98 appearances and scoring 52 goals from 1953 to 1957. He capped for Ireland 4 times. He tragically died in the Munich Air Disaster on 6th February 1958.
Starting his experience with Manchester United as a reserve, he became a starter in the 1956-57 season. Whelan was a formidable offensive player, gifted with great composure in front of the goal, uncommon sense for goal, a venomous shot and the intelligence in finding the most favourable scoring position. Not just a great scorer, he was also a schemer who created chances with his notable vision and excellent passing skill. While he lacked speed and was clumsy on the ball at times, he possessed a combination of solid strength, sloppy technique, mesmerising dribbling, magnetic ball control and footballing brain that enabled him to get out of most situations and slip through the defense.
