Tacconi was a goalkeeper. He spent the majority of his career at Juventus, playing 382 matches from 1983 to 1992, gaining 7 caps for Italy. The Bianconeri bought him from Avellino, where he was noticed during the three seasons he spent there, playing 105 games. He played also for Pro Patria, Livorno, Sambenedettese and Genoa, where he retired in 1994.
Tacconi had a lively attitude. He was reliable and consistent but exalted himself even more in the most crucial matches. Despite having a tall and well built physique, he was incredibly athletic and skilled between the posts. He could make great leaps or dives to reach difficult balls or long range shots. He was also very confident in 1-on-1 situations, being effective at closing the space to the incoming attacker. He was less effective out of the goal, when he had to stop crosses and had troubles at stopping headers, not even moving to try reaching the ball most of the times. He had a powerful goal kick and was capable to stop the ball with the feet but in terms of using them to play the ball he wasn't good at all and suffered for the new rule that forbade goalkeepers to use the hands to catch a voluntary back-pass by a teammate.
