Bergomi is a former right back, capable of playing as left back, centre back or sweeper. He spent his entire career at Inter, making 757 appearances from 1979 to 1999, scoring 28 goals and captaining the side in the last seven seasons. He capped for Italy in 81 occasions, scoring 6 goals and winning the 1982 FIFA World Cup as protagonist in the three final matches when he was only 18 years old.
One of Inter best ever defenders, Bergomi was a versatile, strong and athletic defender. He was a highly consistent hard-working player, an excellent and tenacious man marker with good technical abilities, speed and stamina, tactical intelligence and confidence with the ball, great fighting spirit and timing, ability in the air thanks mainly to a great leap. Later in his career he improved his zonal marking and covering ability. He wasn't just an outstanding defender but he could also push forward frequently to drive the team, support the attack and deliver accurate crosses or score, especially with powerful long range shots. He had an important temperament and sometimes a rough playstyle that led him to receive twelve red cards throughout his career due to his hard tackling. However, he was always praised for his fairness, professionalism and discipline. He was nicknamed "Uncle" due to the huge moustache he had when he was only 17 years old and when he was older than 20, he cut his moustache and changed his hairstyle. So, many wondered why he was nicknamed "Uncle" because he rather looked like a nephew.
