Tawan is a former attacking and central midfielder. His career began in 1993 at Rajvithi. He then played for Bangkok Bank between 1995 and 1997. He had his best time in Singapore at Sembawang Rangers, where he played 180 matches and scored 29 goals from 1998 to 2003. After an experience in Vietnam at Hoàng Anh Gia Lai between 2004 and 2006, he came back to Thailand, playing for BEC Tero Sasana, where he stayed until his retirement in 2009. He capped 110 times for Thailand, scoring 19 goals and winning four Southeast Asian Games, three AFF Championships and three King's Cups.
Regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in the history of Thailand, Tawan was renowned for his creative passing ability and set-piece taking. A very short player, he was a brilliant playmaker, gifted with agility and style, technique and turning ability, good touch of the ball and a powerful long range shot. Not very prolific as a scorer, his two most memorable goals came in friendly matches, respectively in 2001 against Manchester United and 2007 against Netherlands: the first was a right-footed shot after a few turns, the second was a curled free kick from 30 yards.
