Pienaar is a former side-midfielder, winger and attacking midfielder. His career started in 1999 at Ajax Cape Town. He transferred to the Netherlands in 2001 by joining Ajax where he spent five seasons, making 131 appearances and scoring 18 goals. After one year at Borussia Dortmund, he had a three and a half years long spell at Everton where he played 133 matches and scored 12 goals. He was signed by Tottenham Hotspur in January 2011 but the experience was underwhelming. The following January, he returned to Everton, making 96 more appearances and scoring 12 more goals. He left for Sunderland in 2016. He eventually returned to South Africa in 2017 as he spent one season at Bidvets Wits before retiring in 2018. He capped for South Africa 62 times, scoring 3 goals.
Pienaar was a remarkable midfielder, distinguished by his high technical qualities and ball distribution. He wasn't very consistent but his agile movements, excellent dribbling, ball control and defense-cutting passes were always a big weapon for his teams. He was quick in short distances, could use the outside and the heel very well, and had a fine shot though not always on target. His crosses weren't always accurate, sometimes reaching a teammate but often being an easy catch for the opposition's goalkeeper. He was also a solid set piece taker. While Pienaar's primary position was wide on the left, he could be seen moving across the field, acting on the right or as attacking midfielder throughout the match regardless of his assigned role. Furthermore, he didn't dislike to fall back and support the midfield during the defensive phase.
