INFO:
Hampton was a centre forward who mostly played for Aston Villa, scoring 242 goals in 376 matches between 1904 and 1920. He made no less than 19 goals in almost every season, except the 1908-09 and the 1919-20 which was the last one with Aston Villa. In 1912-13 he even reached 30 goals. He played also for Birmingham City from 1920 to 1922, scoring 31 goals in 57 games. The striker won 4 caps for England and scored twice. He retired in 1925.
Hampton was a brave striker who didn't fear to fight the defenders thanks to his strength and determination, being able to win shoulder-to-shoulder duels despite not having a very imposing size. He had such strength that he could defenders and goalkeepers over the goal-line. Once he even managed to make the gigantic goalkeeper William Foulke stumble over the line! A heartful player, Hampton was a very accurate shooter, considered one of the most deadly during his period. Moreover he had the ability to make passes to the outside towards the wingers, a feature not typical of centre forwards of that time. Hampton didn't play much for England though because the national team coaches didn't like his playstyle.
