Mariner was a striker who won the 1980-81 UEFA Cup with Ipswich Town. He started his career in the minor team Plymouth Argyle in 1973, scoring 61 goals in 155 matches in three seasons. He was sold to Ipswich Town in 1976 and scored 136 goals in 337 matches, winning the 1977-78 FA Cup besides the UEFA Cup. He joined Arsenal in 1984 playing 70 games and scoring 17 goals until 1986. After spells at Portsmouth and some minor teams around the world, he retired in 1993. His performances with Ipswich Town made him win the international status and he capped 35 times for England, scoring 13 goals between 1977 and 1985. Mariner was a forward who took hard tackles and rough treatments from defenders without giving back; he was a target-man centre forward who scored lots of goals BUT he also possessed the skill to create his own chances rather than staying in the centre of the area waiting for an assist; he had very good technique and dribbling, extraordinary heading, nice speed and passing; he wasn't a static centre forward but he often went out of the area to take to ball off his opponents, often with tackles. Among his many goals one of the most remarkable is the one he scored with England against Norway in 1980, a magnificent shot from 25 yards after a deft turn. Brilliant fourth goal scored by Mariner in the 4-0 win against Norway in 1980.
