Ilunga is a former left-back. His career started in 2002 at Espanyol B. One year later, he transferred to France, signing for Saint-Étienne where he had his best time, making 168 appearances and scoring 2 goals between 2003 and 2007. He then played for Toulouse, West Ham United, Doncaster Rovers, Stade Rennais, Jeanne d'Arc Carquefou, and Créteil-Lusitanos. He retired in 2016. Representing the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2003 to 2011, he earned 34 caps, scoring 1 goal.
Ilunga was a good side-back who possessed remarkable pace off the ball and solid on the ball as well as good crossing ability. He was a decent dribbler but his control wasn't always accurate. He liked to join the attack to attempt a cross but he wasn't too focused in pushing forward. He usually stayed in his half, protecting the back-line. His defensive skills weren't excellent but still solid overall, especially in anticipation and the ability to put himself between ball and opponent.
