Certainly the most talented player in Dundee United's history and one of the most talented British players of his generation. Ralph Milne was an electric right winger, perfectly two footed and with the ability to produce spectacular goals. His pace and dribbling ability meant he could easily fly past 3 defenders in quick succession, and he could hit some nice crosses with both feet with the inside or the outside of his foot. He was a prolific scorer: in United's league title winning season he was their top scorer with 16 goals, and he also holds the club record for most goals in Europe. He was also a scorer in crucial moments, most famously to seal the title win on the last day of the season with a spectacular chip against city rivals Dundee. Unfortunately he was an inconsistent player with serious off-field problems with drinking and indiscipline which led to an early decline. His clashes with the strict rules of despotic manager Jim McLean led to so many fines that he had to work construction jobs in his free time to afford his mortgage. By his mid-20s he was on a permanent decline and he began to miss more and more games, eventually leaving for England where he notably had a very bad time with Manchester United. Despite his huge talent and contributions for Dundee United, he never received a cap for Scotland and is often considered one of the best Scottish players to never play for the national team. For a brief few years Milne had the potential to be a world class player, but unfortunately he is one of the great "what if" stories in Scottish football.
