INFO:Zhang Honggen was a winger and centre forward. He started his career with South China, and the played for Beijing City in the late 1950s. He capped for China 13 times ─ sources report a total of 51 appearances ─ and scored at least 6 goals. One of the key players of China national team in the 1950s, he scored the Chinese first ever goal in FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 1957. He retired in 1965 due to injury.
Considered the best Chinese player in the 1950s and one of the best ever in the history of the country, Zhang Honggen was praised for his sophisticated technique, delicate footwork, clear head, the ability to be good not only in the attacking but also during the defensive phase. Fast, skilled, reactive, he possessed a powerful shot on both feet, a repertoire of superb feints and tricks, the ability to break through the defence. On top of that, he could organise the attacking play for his teammates. Before he retired, his injuries forced him to play more in the midfield.
