Michal Horňák was a Czech defender best known for his solid performances in the team that reached the final of Euro 96 (playing every minute of the tournament), and also for Sparta Prague with whom he won 10 league titles. Horňák was a versatile player that could play equally well at centre back or right back, he mostly played right back for Sparta but played as a centre back for the national team, generally in a back 3; he also played as a right wing back in the final of Euro 96. Horňák was blessed with good pace and technique but also strong defensive abilities, he was an excellent tackler and good at anticipating opponents. He excelled as a wide centre back at Euro 96 where his speed and defensive solidity helped him shut down opposing wingers, while being able to bring the ball forward with his good technique and distribution. He wasn't the strongest despite his good height and preferred defending in wide positions because he was more vulnerable to larger, more physically and aerially dominant centre forwards. With the ball, he was a cultured player who always played the smart passes, very rarely losing possession and especially good at sending long passes down the wing, particularly to Karel Poborský with whom he had a good partnership for the national team. He was a permanent player in Sparta's team as they dominated Czech football in the 90s, while also recording some good results in European football, such as finishing in the top 4 of the European Cup in the 91/92 season. He finished his international career with 38 caps and a quiet yet important role in one of the greatest teams in Czech history.
