Pecci was a midfielder, who could play in the center, behind the strikers or in front of the defence. His career began in 1973 at Bologna. He joined Torino in 1975, won the Scudetto in his first season, scored 16 goals in 203 matches and gained 6 caps for Italy. He left in 1981 for Fiorentina, where he played 142 games, scoring 15 goals until 1985. After a season at Napoli, he came back to Bologna in 1986, playing three more seasons, for a total of 113 appearances and 5 goals ─ 159 and 7 considering also his early years.
Arguably one of the most underrated Italian midfielders, some consider him as one of the best creative playmakers Italy has ever produced. He was a leader in the pitch but his bad temperament outside of it decreased his chance to play more for Italy. Also injuries, especially in his early career, limited his consistency. He was gifted with fantastic tactical awareness, great technique, passing ability and accuracy with both feet. He wasn't very fast but could increase the rhythm of a match whenever he wanted and had the ability to figure out when he had to dribble or to accelerate the play. His understanding with his teammates was superb. Thanks to his vision of the game, numerous passes, crosses and in general set ups of the attack came from him. He didn't score many goals but possessed a good shot from outside the box ─ proved especially during his time at Fiorentina ─ and decent heading ability.
