What top defenders are you speaking about? LFC has three now top defenders, VvD and TAA/Robertson who both played yesterday. Matip is nothing more than an average defender who played two seasons above his usual level (and no, scoring a goal in a UCL final certainly doesn't make you a top defender). Same goes for Fabinho and Wijnaldum who simply "overperformed" in the last two years. That's nothing LFC-exclusive, if teams are in strong and constant form even the weaker squad members look much better than they actually are.

Completely disagree with Fabinho. He is absolutely world class and their best midfielder. And when he’s played at CB he’s been excellent too. He’s a fantastic player and a top 3 DMF in the world (I’d only say Kimmich is better)

"top defenders" could be interpreted also "starting defenders" as well.

Even if Bayern was in the worst possible condition, a team like Lazio will always be worse.

Brring back Marchegiani, Nesta, Salas, Nedvěd, Crespo & Verón to see if they have a chance to keep up.

Let's face it: I expected much, much more from Lazio, especially in terms of aggressivess in midfield and defence.
But what their defence displayed really shocked me, basically gifting us the goals. Btw, remember this man:

Regarding the other match: Imagine spending 173 millions on Ziyech, Havertz and Werner only to be saved by a bicycle goal by Giroud

Edit: Totally forgot the highlight of the evening:

Imagine beeing dribbled out by a 1,95 m tall guy who weighs at least 95 kg

Even worse seeing Atleti spend €200m on Felix and Lemar alone, and then playing incredibly defensively, 40% possession, not even trying to score and failing to get a single shot on target against a team behind West Ham in the league

Simeone is an amazing manager but his "safety first" approach really hurts them sometimes, there's no reason they can't take the game to Chelsea, it's not like they're lacking in attacking talent. Fair enough that they were playing their "home" game in Romania but I can honestly say without even joking that Barnsley gave Chelsea more trouble two weeks ago in the FA Cup.

Edit: forgot that Atletico have paid €450 million for players in the last 3 seasons, and pay Simeone a ridiculous €40m a year. They really shouldn't be playing like underdogs with that sort of investment, they look like a slightly more attacking Burnley most of the time. This is the 6th minute of the game:

Future of our NT just got much brighter. With Wirtz, Musiala and Moukoko we have three extraordinary talents that were born in 2003 or 2004, now we just need to finally get rid of Löw and Bierhoff.
But the best thing is to read all butthurt English fans who now say that they don't need Musiala anyway because they have Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Jack Grealish

How good is this man? 31 goals in 23 BL games, even Gerd Müller's record seems to be breakable now:

Easily the best CF of this century so far, nobody can question that anymore. If he continues to play like that then he needs to win Ballon d'Or this year - if France Football doesn't find a magic excuse not to award it again.

Haven't seen anything like what Ronaldo did tonight standing at the wall. Very disappointing performance in general. Also Morata was too pathetic, while Cuadrado was impressive the least. Congrats to Porto for their courage.

Now Agnelli can develop his superleague plan in peace, since he's out from Champions League and soon he'll lose Scudetto too. Maybe that superleague could be good for juventus, then they shouldn't be worried about being eliminated by Galatasaray, Ajax, Lyon, Porto...

Am I the only one who appreciates the development of the last three years because they finally show what both Messi and Ronaldo are? Humans and not some semi-god footballers like their fanboys wanted to make them look like.
All the time they were just like "OMG Messi/CR7 GOAT, they carry the whole squad alone", guess some of them must have realized now that even those two benefited a lot from their team mates.
And before I'm misunderstood here: This is not aimed at Messi/Ronaldo themselves, it's aimed at their annoying fans/fanboys who've taken basically opportunity to debase other players and even legends of the game just to put their "idols" even higher.

Btw:

Don't think that Sevilla should be considered "dead" yet, they still can turn the tide in Dortmund. Although I'm pretty sure that Haaland will score at least one goal already in the first half and then the thing will be done.

Seems that I wasn't too wrong although things got a bit chaotic in the extra time ;)

Well, Messi and Ronaldo are still carrying their teams basically alone, without them Barca and Juve would be sitting in mid-table. The main difference is just that both are old now and played more football than 99% of players do in their entire career. It’s impossible for them to win everything alone, no current player in the world could win anything wit this Barca or Juve team. However, if you put a 27 year old Messi or Ronaldo in their current team they’d be running away with the league. Champions League would still be out of reach, both teams are simply too far away from the best teams in the world right now.

Reminder that Ronaldo is 36 years old and still the top scorer in Italy and single handedly keeping his team in the title race despite playing in front of a midfield that can’t create anything at all. You could probably count on one hand the amount of players that can do that in the entirety of history. Very few of the greatest legends were even still playing at that age. Messi is less fit but he’s still the most complete attacking player in the world, even if he doesn’t move much he’s still creating more chances than anyone while also scoring a fantastic number of goals. It’s simply unreasonable to expect these guys to still be winning every trophy, it’s already incredible what they’re currently doing but they’ve set such high standards in the past that it looks bad in comparison, when outside of like 3 or 4 current players, everyone else would be lucky to even get near their current level.

The only thing I’m happy about is that Barca and Madrid are no longer dominating everything, it would be nice to see some other teams get the chance to compete for the trophies. But if that means that people are starting to disrespect Messi and Ronaldo as if the last 10+ years didn’t happen then that’s just sad. Any football fan should respect these guys.
