INFO:
Nicolini was an enforcer defensive midfielder who played also as attacking midfielder. His career began in 1972 at Sampdoria. He played 32 matches in four seasons with the Blucerchiati. In 1976 he transferred to Catanzaro, where he stayed for four season plus two more between 1987 and 1989 when he retired, for a total of 186 games and 8 goals. In the middle the 1980-81 season at Napoli with 33 matches and 3 goals; four seasons at Ascoli, where he probably had his best time, with 134 matches and 11 goals; the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons at Bologna, playing 78 appearances and 7 goals.
Compared to German legend Netzer for his look and playstyle, Nicolini was gifted with good technique, passing ability and was accurate with both feet. He had unforgettable feats and balanced well attack and defence, stopping the opponents and making great saves but also constantly pushing forward to support the attack or to look for a goal. His pace was decisive, his shots had good power. He often moved to the flank, running down to deliver a cross and if he wasn't outside the box, he was inside it ready to kick in goal a vacant ball. Memorable is the 2-0 win against Cagliari in the 1982-83 season: in the same match he made a crucial acrobatic save on the goal-line and later he scored with a very good lob shot from outside the box after a dribbling.
