Kenna is a former right back. He played mainly for Southampton and Blackburn Rovers. He played 122 matches and scored 4 goals for the Saints from 1989 to 1995. He joined Blackburn Rovers at the beginning of 1995, just in time to win the Premier League, played 194 games and scored once. He left the club in 2001. He played for several other clubs including Birmingham City and Derby County. He retired in 2009. He capped 27 times for Ireland.
Kenna preferred playing on the right side ─ where he had better performances ─ even though he was sometimes used on the left, especially at Blackburn to replace Graeme Le Saux either when he played in the midfield or when he was injured. More effective in attack than in defence, Kenna possessed a good physique, decent running ability and could deliver accurate long passes from the back or the end line.
