INFO:

There were always many problem footballers in Brazil. The first of them was Heleno de Freitas, however an indisputable genius. His way of playing was admired and recognized for the great elegancy, excellent ball control, splendid header and brilliant technique; it is reputed that Heleno invented a move which consisted to smooth a long crossing ball on the chest and then kick it without let it fall on the pitch. He was also able to let his teammates in front of the goal post with precise passes, even though he was a legitimate center-forward. For him, a well performed dribble, a “caneta” (an inventive dribble in which the ball intersects the opponent’s legs) were way worthy than a casual goal scoring by chance, for instance. The elderly think fair the nickname of “White Pelé”. Heleno de Freitas had another nickname which turned him very mad: “Gilda” – a famous role played by Rita Hayworth of a very nervous and irritated woman.

He was a superb scorer too, performing the remarkable achievement of 209 goals in 235 matches (!) for Botafogo. Not in vain he was also nicknamed as the “White Diamond”, succeeding the already veteran legendary player Leônidas da Silva, the “Black Diamond”, at the NT.

Nevertheless, his career was not prolific because his bad-temper and his careless, irresponsible life-style. He was always in big troubles, involved in constant disagreements with teammates and coaches, ever leading him to many expels and ruining the entire performance of his teams. The worse intrigue of him resulted in his absence in the 1950 FIFA World Cup, because his fight with the coach Flávio Costa to whom he pointed an unloaded gun (!!). Some people seriously affirm if he had attended at the NT at that time, we could have won the tournament along with Zizinho, Danilo Alvim, Barbosa and Ademir de Menezes.

Heleno also turned in a very known football figure in Argentina, at Boca Juniors, and Colombia, at Junior de Barranquilla. Despite he was contaminated by syphilis (allegedly) for already many years ago at that time, he became a respected idol in those countries, highly acclaimed for both above mentioned clubs – Colombian fans have an statue of him in Barranquilla what one may read “El Jugador” (The Player). He was an idol at Boca Juniors too (some people say he and Evita Perón had a brief affair). After a considerable period without a single Boca Juniors’ victory, Heleno made his debut scoring a goal assuring the break of a taboo.

His terrible bad-temper associated with the worsening of his disease faded completely his talent, letting him entirely insane. (Info provided by me based on interviews and readings)

Heleno played at Botafogo until beginning of 48. So, I suggest change era to 45-47, what was exactly his peak.

He also had a good year in Vasco at 49 but it was for a short period.
