Signed by Castor de Andrade after standing out at Campo Grande, Israel made his debut for Bangu in 1984 during the club's tour of South Korea. The defining moment of his career at the club came during Bangu's run to the 1985 Campeonato Brasileiro final, where he formed a highly balanced midfield alongside Lulinha and Mário Marques.
He played for Bangu from 1984 to 1989, returning for another spell in 1991, scoring 3 goals in 225 appearances. An excellent defensive midfielder, he delivered outstanding performances between 1984 and 1987 thanks to his strong defensive play and superb long-range passing. He was a member of the memorable 1985 squad that finished as runners-up in both the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Campeonato Carioca.
Although he spent the entire 1987 season sidelined after undergoing knee surgery, he made a successful return. He also played for Botafogo before returning to Moça Bonita for a brief final spell, making only a handful of appearances.
