Nidelson “Nenei” da Silva Melo was a very explosive striker who left a huge impression in every league he touched, especially during his spells with Herediano, El Salvador and later in Mexico with Toluca and Toros Neza. In Costa Rica he became league top scorer with Herediano in 1992–93 scoring a total of 21 goals, and many fans still remember him as a kind of “Ronaldo-lite” for that era: very fast in open field, deadly when attacking space and with enough dribbling to leave defenders behind. In Mexico he confirmed that level with a double-digit season at Toluca and a spectacular campaign at Toros Neza.
His game was built on acceleration and verticality: always playing on the shoulder of the last defender, making diagonal runs, attacking through balls and punishing any bad defensive line. Technically he was more than just pace – good first touch, sharp changes of direction and the ability to finish calmly with either power or placement. The downside was his irregularity and off-field issues (marked by a rampant alcoholism), which stopped him from having an even bigger career and made his performances fluctuate a lot from season to season. He is the brother of the two-time World Cup player for Brazil, Gilberto Da Silva Melo.
