Defence-MindedINFO:Franco Armani is an Argentinian footballer who plays as a goalkeeper. Born in Casilda, Santa Fe (16/10/1986), he went through the youth ranks at Central Córdoba (R) and Estudiantes de La Plata, where he would become part of his first professional squad. In 2007, at the age of 20, without having made his debut in the Primera Division, the club decided to loan him out to Ferro Carril Oeste, where he officially made his professional debut. For the 2008-09 Primera B Metropolitana season, Armani signed with Deportivo Merlo, where he would achieve promotion to the second division. In the pre-season of June 2010, Atlético Nacional toured Argentina and faced Deportivo Merlo. In that match, his performance was so outstanding that the club's management began negotiations to sign him, resulting in his transfer to foreign football at the age of 23. Franco Armani, despite having a rather slow start at Atlético Nacional, would eventually become the most important goalkeeper in their history, winning 13 championships, including the 2016 Copa Libertadores, where Armani was chosen as the best goalkeeper of the competition. In 2016, he went 745 minutes without conceding a goal in the Copa Libertadores, holding the best record for a goalkeeper in the tournament's history. Additionally, at Atlético Nacional, he was awarded the best goalkeeper in America once, and three times the best goalkeeper in the Colombian League. On January 1, 2018, Armani signed with River Plate for a total value of 3.8 million dollars, hoping to have more visibility in the continent and be called up to the FIFA World Cup 2018. Armani at River Plate would break all kinds of records, including the record for unbeaten minutes at River that Amadeo Carrizo had set in 1968. That same year, his incredible performance in the Copa Libertadores, which River would win against their arch-rival, earned him not only the award for the best goalkeeper in America again but also a call-up to the National Team to play in the World Cup. Franco Armani is the most decorated Argentine goalkeeper in history with twenty-six titles won, ranking fifth worldwide. He is also the most successful player in the history of Atlético Nacional and one of the most important goalkeepers in the history of River Plate.
Armani made his debut for the national team on June 26, 2018, as a starter, in the final Group D match against the Nigerian national team, which the Albiceleste had to win to secure passage to the next phase, after a draw against Iceland (1-1) and a tough defeat against Croatia (0-3). After the World Cup, with Argentina eliminated by France in the round of 16, Armani solidified his position as the starting goalkeeper for the Argentine National Team and by a wide margin as the best Argentine goalkeeper. With the arrival of the new coach, Lionel Scaloni, Armani would be called up again to play in the 2019 Copa America, with outstanding performances, including a penalty save against Paraguay in the group stage. He also played several matches in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. During the 2021 Copa America, he only played in 1 match, being relegated to the bench in favor of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. Ultimately, he was crowned champion of the tournament, which the Argentine National Team had not won since 1993. Additionally, Armani was included in the list of 23 players who would go to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, in which Argentina emerged victorious, obtaining their third star after 36 years.
