Mauro Laspada is an Argentinian former footballer who played as a center-back. Born in Punta Alta, Buenos Aires (09/01/1975), Laspada grew up as a football player at Club Atlético Sporting, his city's team, and played his youth football at Independiente. After three years at the Avellaneda club and never having been able to make the first team bench, at the age of 21 he moved to Godoy Cruz de Mendoza, the team in which he would make his professional debut in 1996. Laspada would later play for Atlético Rafaela, Juventud Antoniana, Belgrano (where he would play his first games in the First Division), and Tigre. It was in 2001 when Laspada arrived at what would be the club that would represent him the most: Olimpo de Bahía Blanca. That year, Laspada would achieve the long-awaited promotion to the First Division for the Bahía Blanca club, being their first experience in the first category of Argentine football since his participation in the 1984 National Tournament, and their first participation in the First Division since the restructuring of national football. Laspada would score a free kick in the promotion final against Instituto de Córdoba, on December 27, 2001.
In its first season in the First Division, Olimpo would finish the Apertura Tournament in 17th position, but in the Clausura Tournament, they would make a comeback, finishing in fifth position, a historic milestone for the city. Laspada was the great captain of Olimpo during his stay in the First Division, forming a memorable duo of center backs with Javier 'Satanás' Páez, both becoming undisputed idols of the institution, with Olimpo fans even asking Laspada for the National Team. Olimpo would be relegated to the Primera B Nacional in the 2005-06 season, and Laspada due to problems with the coach, Laspada decided to for Unión de Santa Fe. However, after only half a year he returned to Olimpo to fight again for a place in the premier category of Argentine football. After becoming champion of the Second Division again in 2007, Laspada would go to play for Alvarado de Mar del Plata for a year, and the following year he decided to hang up his boots playing for his hometown club, C.A. Sporting de Punta Alta, retiring at the age of 34 from all professional activity.

Mauro Laspada was a very tough center-back, and together with Javier 'Satanás' Páez he would form one of the most remembered center-back duos in Argentine football, but not for their good play but for their toughness: Laspada was an extremely tough player with great ease in kicking. Despite his fairly good defensive positioning, Mauro tended to arrive late to many of the tackles, causing violent fouls. He was quite slow, and he wasn't a great passer, nor a great dribbler either, in fact, he used to describe his game as "rustic" (a term that became ingrained in the Argentine vocabulary to describe a center back with difficulties in technical matters and violent when playing). He had great shooting power, capable of clearing balls outside the stadiums. Laspada stated on several occasions that he used to clear the ball very far away (or outside the stadium) to demoralize the rival team, although he also did it because it was something very celebrated by Olimpo fans when he did it at home. Measuring 1.92 and weighing about 100 kilos, Mauro was a very strong player with his body, withstanding physical contact very well. He also had a good header, scoring a significant number of goals in this way, although due to his height, he did not need to jump very high for this. Laspada was also a frequent free kick taker and was considered by his teammates to be a natural leader.
