Defence-MindedINFO:Santiago Gentiletti is an Argentinian former footballer who played as a center-back and as a left-back. Born in Gödaken, Santa Fe (09/01/1985), Gentiletti made his professional debut with Gimnasia y Esgrima (LP) on April 9, 2005, facing Vélez Sarsfield. In his five years at the club, he played 68 games and scored one goal. Later he would play for two years in Chile, become Argentinian champion with Argentinos Juniors in 2010, and be bought by Stade Brestois in France. On July 27, 2012, he arrived in San Lorenzo, which had just escaped relegation but was still at risk of losing the category. At first, he did not have great performances so he gradually lost his starting position as a left-back. With the arrival of Emmanuel Mas in 2013 to cover that position, Gentiletti was able to return to his natural position as center-back where he would have outstanding performances that would make him the undisputed starter in the 2013 Torneo Inicial in which San Lorenzo would emerge as champion. After an excellent performance in the 2014 Copa Libertadores, being champion and being part of the ideal 11 chosen by Conmebol, Gentiletti would be bought by Lazio, who decided to pay $2.5 million to activate the termination clause in his contract. On September 21, in the 3rd round of the Serie A, Gentiletti would tear his cruciate ligaments in the 68th minute. This would cost him a 6-month inactivity and the suspension of the call-up that Gerardo Martino, coach of the Argentine national team, had planned for him. He would remain in the Roman team for two seasons, during which he would be an important part of the club, and would even wear the captain armband of the Roman squad on several occasions. In July 2016, Genoa reached an agreement with Lazio for the signing of the Argentine defender. The player would soon take over as a starter in the defense and would remain for another two seasons, also being one of the captains of the first team. On August 28, 2018, Albacete Balompié reported the incorporation of the Argentine player, who joined for free after ending his contract with Genoa. After 33 games for the Spanish club, in 2021 he decided to return to Argentian to retire at his boyhood club, Newel's Old Boys at the age of 36.
Very energetic central defender who is very effusive at man-marking. Not too fast, he often uses anticipation and body-to-body tackles to snatch the ball from his opponents. Being a natural left-footed player he could play either in a four-man defense or as a left-sided center-back in a three-man line; in San Lorenzo, and his earlier clubs, he also used to play as a left-back. He possessed good positioning and defensive intelligence, he had great control and passing of the ball for a player in his position, he was very strong for his size, and was also a great anticipator. His best football version came during his time in Italy, although the ACL injury he had in his first year transformed him into a quite different player: in a much more physical league such as the Serie A, he had to start to rely more on his technique and intelligence than on his physique, which was already deteriorated. He had several injuries during his time at Genoa, which ended up relegating him to the bench during the 2016-17 season, but throughout the 2015-16 season, he was one of the club's best players.
