Comfortable with both feet, endowed with an exceptional vision of the game and a real speed of execution, he was the launching pad of the Mayenne attackers. One of the best #10s in the league in those years. Capable of being a provider, he also knows how to transform himself into a scorer. Very fast player, excellent technician, great shot technique. Often compared to Raymond Keruzoré, another Lavallois legend (Keruzore once said: "he is better than me"). In Laval, he was a playmaker full of talent and technique, nicknamed the "Platini of Le Basser". He had two good years with Laval, scoring 21 goals in that time. These qualities allowed him to become an international in 1981, when he played for Nancy. Always entitled to preferential treatment from opposing teams. "I always had a guy at the marking. At the time, we often played in 4-3-3 and the 10 was taken by the 6 opposite. They were leeches." Trained in Rennes and after a stint in Laval, Patrick Delamontagne arrived at ASNL in 1980 with a French international status. At 22 years old, he is a player full of technical qualities, able to change pace and especially to deliver long precise passes as another number ten of the ASNL knew how to do: Michel Platini. He finally spent two years in Nancy (62 matches, 11 goals), then tried a new adventure in Monaco, but did not manage to find a place in the sun. With the team of the principality, however, he played in a final of the Coupe de France and also became vice-champion of France in 1984. For his second spell in Mayenne, he scored 19 goals and returned to the French team in a qualifying match for the Euro against Norway in 1987. Creator capable in a single pass to tip a match, he remains the "Platini of Le Basser" and revived his career. After playing for Laval 3 years, he then played one year for Marseille before he his last pro match in 1991 with Rennes. Patrick will remain in the collective memories, with his curly boil and his number 10 on his back, as a player capable of all exploits. Despite an astonishing stability in his performances and an extraordinary talent, this discreet and cultured boy clearly did not have the career he deserved. I'm not sure if there's a need for such a long set. I created a set for 1978-1981, when he was one of the greatest talents, which earned him his first caps in the NT. But often handicapped by injuries, he was never able to fully show his talent. Yes, he earned his third, last cap in 1987, but I assume that he changed in a way during those years, especially due to injuries. I could already see that in his Monaco years..
The only year worth considering maybe is 1984 when he reached the Coupe de France final with Monaco and ended up in the 2nd place, tied with Bordeaux, however he also scored like 1 goal in those 2 seasons (3 if you count CdF) and was often in the subs. Still, he's definitely a Laval legend, he even said in an interview in Monaco that he didn't enjoy playing there as much as in Laval. Looking at the set, there's quite a few items that seem a bit off to me: - I don't think he was that speedy and strong. - I don't think he dribbled that much, nor was he so good at it. His dribbles weren't too complicated, he played a simple game. He was first and foremost a very technical player who was creative and with a great vision and decisive last pass (both short and long). Also, his dribble speed was not that high - Not sure about the shot power as well, he did have a strong shot but 89 puts him in a very strong spot. - His Att and His Def is a bit higher too. Even though he had a good share of goals, in his early years especially he played a very movable playmaker position, acting even as a winger at times. He wasn't too active on the defensive end, but would be seen back in the 16m trying to recover the ball. - Didn't have a high jump from what I've seen, neither a very good heading game. - Did you see where he took the free kicks so accurately and can you maybe show me that? I saw that he was a free kick taker and occasionally corner kick taker, but just because there were no better takers until he started playing in Nancy and Monaco. - Finally, he used both feet very well and could launch a very accurate long ball with his left foot All in all, he was indeed a great player, but for sure he didn't have a great career overall. He experienced serious football early and couldn't cope with it, staying at the "big talent" level. Here's my proposal: Spoiler: show |
