INFO:Maurice Malpas was one of the best Scottish left backs and a one-club man for Dundee United. He played an incredible 830 games for his only club and was Scotland's starting left back for most of the late 80s and early 90s. Malpas was an extremely consistent and reliable player, excellent in defence and in particular at marking wingers out of the game. His timing and anticipation was very good and he would constantly intercept passes to cut off the supply to his opponent. He was also a good athlete, pretty quick and strong in the air, which made him a tough opponent for any winger. On top of that he rarely missed games, and was a tenacious player that never let his team down. His versatility allowed him to play on both sides and the middle of defence, and even as a wide midfielder, although he wasn't particularly effective going forward. He preferred to stay back in defensive duties as both CBs, Narey and Hegarty, and earlier in his career, starting right back Gough liked to go forward for set pieces and in open play. As Malpas approached his later career, he moved into the centre of defence full time. Malpas was a crucial contributor to Dundee United's greatest successes and certainly one of the biggest legends in the club's history.
