Not sure it was the right decision because by leaving these players in front of their television sets and sitting next to their phones, Derwall was effectively cutting off any hope they might have had in playing an active role in the squad dynamic, even if they would not actually get to play. Frank MILLl, the young Borussia Mönchengladbach striker, a natural and crafty goalscorer, who came on as a substitute in the warm-up matches against Argentina and Brazil, was on the list to be included in the group of 22, but was unable to defend his candidacy due to a back injury. Klaus ALLOFS finished Bundesliga's top scorer in 1978-79 season and was in his highlight career at the Euro 1980, scoring three goals in the competition and leading West Germany to the title. After signing in the summer of 1981 at Fc Köln, he was injured before the end of the championship. Without this event, he would have been part of the team sent to Spain, his brother Thomas being only an alternative. Paul Breitner was recall to the national team after a qualification match on april, 1, 1981 against Albania.Briegel had been pushed into the defense to accommodate Breitner in the midfield. The problems started the following month in a friendly match against Brazil in which Breitner completely ignored Bernd SCHUSTER by not passing him a single ball. Schuster refused to return to the team and was attacked in the press by the duo dubbed "Breitnigge" composed of Rummenigge and Breitner. The intervention of the president of the federation made possible a reconciliation, but Schuster’s serious injury in a League match vs. Athletic Bilbao on December 13th, 1981, caused by "the butcher" Andoni Goikoetxea , would force him to miss the rest of the season including the World Cup. Captain during Euro 1980 et Gold Cup "Mundialito" in january 1981, Bernard DIETZ sealed his fate with the National Team by openly criticizing the inclusion of Breitner, whom he felt would wield a negative influence on the rest of the squad. This very fighting and experienced player could have been useful in a World Cup. *World Cup qualifications, Gold Cup & Friendlies From December 3 1980 to May 12 1982 Forwards Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (Bayern Munich) : 15 selections as starter Klaus Fischer (FC Köln) : 12 selections : 11 as starter/1 as substitute Horst Hrubesch (Hamburger SV) : 8 selections : 7 as starter/1 as substitute Pierre Littbarski (FC Köln) : 7 selections as starter Klaus Allofs (FC Köln) : 5 selections : 4 as starter/1 as substitute Frank Mill (Borussia Mönchengladbach) : 3 selections as substitute Uwe Reinders (Werder Bremen) : 1 selection as substitute Jürgen Milewski (Hamburger SV) : 1 selection as substitute Midfielders Felix Magath (Hamburger SV) : 13 selections as starter Paul Breitner (Bayern Munich) : 13 selections as starter Wolfgang Dremmler (Bayern Munich) : 11 selections : 9 as starter/2 as substitute Hansi Müller (VfB Stuttgart) : 10 selections as starter Lothar Matthäus (Borussia Mönchengladbach) : 6 selections : 4 as starter/2 as substitute Karl Allgöwer (VfB Stuttgart) : 5 selections as substitute Ronald Borchers (Eintracht Francfort) : 4 selections : 2 as starter/2 as substitute Bernd Schuster (FC Barcelona) : 3 selections as starter Stephan Engels (FC Köln) : 3 selections as substitute Rainer Bonhof (FC Köln) : 2 selections as starter Mirko Votava (Borussia Dortmund) : 2 selections : 1 as starter/1 as substitute Defenders Manfred Kaltz (Hamburger SV) : 16 selections as starter Hans-Peter Briegel (FC Kaiserslautern) : 16 selections as starter Karlheinz Förster (VfB Stuttgart) : 15 selections as starter Uli Stielike (Real Madrid) : 9 selections as starter Wilfried Hannes (Borussia Mönchengladbach) : 7 selections : 5 as starter/2 as substitute Bernd Förster (VfB Stuttgart) : 6 selections : 4 as starter/2 as substitute Bernard Dietz (MSV Duisburg) : 5 selections : 4 as starter/1 as substitute Holger Hieronymus (Hamburger SV) : 2 selections as substitute Goalkeeper Harald Schumacher (FC Köln) : 15 selections as starter Eike Immel (Borussia Dortmund) : 3 selections : 1 as starter/2 as substitute Bernd Franke (Eintracht Braunschweig) : 2 selections : 1 as starter/1 as substitute *Scorers Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (Bayern Munich) : 12 Klaus Fischer (FC Köln) : 11 Pierre Littbarski (FC Köln) : 6 Manfred Kaltz (Hamburger SV) : 5 including 2 penalties Paul Breitner (Bayern Munich) : 4 including 1 penalty Wolfgang Dremmler (Bayern Munich) : 2 Bernd Schuster (FC Barcelona) : 2 Horst Hrubesch (Hamburger SV) : 1 Klaus Allofs (FC Köln) : 1 Hans-Peter Briegel (FC Kaiserslautern) : 1 Felix Magath (Hamburger SV) : 1 |
