Infos :

*Rabah GAMOUH, agile and technical left winger or attacking midfielder, said in an interview that it seemed logical to him to be retained in the final team because of his active participation in the qualification phase, illustrated, in particular, by a decisive goal against Sudan. In the end, only Salah ASSAD was choosen, when GAMOUH could have been a useful substitute for ASSAD who was running out in defensive folds on this left side.

*Ahmed AÏT EL HOCINE was considered at the time to be one of the best Algerian centre-forwards, a pioneer of Zamorano's style of play. He participated in the qualification phase and is quoted in a French television report on the preparation of the Algerian team https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQcMFuOTv_s 3'26"). He was not finally chosen in a team that included a lot of attacking midfielders, without a real specialist in the position of center forward

*Mohammed KACI-SAÏD, considered as one of the best Algerian central midfielders, devoted and combative, participated in numerous qualification matches and was in the Espana 82 Panini Album. Curiously, he was dismissed in favor of players with a more offensive profile like Karim MAROC or Djamel TLEMÇANI. He had to wait for the 1986 World Cup to show his qualities in a match against Brazil.

*Bouzid MAHIOUZ, who played almost every qualification match and appeared also on the Panini album, was unfairly dismissed when he could bring his defensive quality as a stopper or anchor man.The bet of the Algerian coaches to give defensive tasks to attacking midfielders had worked against West Germany, but, not changing these players who were tired, proved to be a bad choice against the Austrian and Chilean attackers.

*Abdel DJAADAOUI, experimented sweeper, leader and captain of the french club "Fc Sochaux", was also in the Panini Album and in the last group just before competition. As Bouzid MAHIOUZ, he could be an useful alternative for the defence.
