Ever since its inception the club has achieved the honor of ten French First Division Championships.Association Sportive de Saint Etienne Loire is also known as ASSE or A.S. It is considered to be one of the most successful teams in the history of French football.
The story of the club has its beginnings in 1920. The employees’ Union of the Casino grocery chain felt the need for a football club in their locality. Saint Etienne was born as a result of their efforts. The color of the grocery chain was green. For this reason, the same color was adopted as the club’s official color. However, it turned out that the word ‘Casino’ in the name of the club was against the rules of the French Football Federation. In accordance to the rules of the federation, the word ‘Casino’ was dropped from the name of the club, and the club was renamed Amical Sporting Club. The club changed its name again, eight years later. Pierre Guichard, the son of the head of the Casino, took charge of the club and renamed it as Association Sportive Stephanoise. The year 1933 saw another change in the name of the club. During that year, the club entered into professional football and called itself: Association Sportive de Saint Etienne. In 1937-38, the club was promoted to the first division of French football, Ligue 1. It has been there ever since. In 1955, the club won its first trophy, the Charles Drago Cup. Three seasons later, it grabbed the French First Division title for the first time in its history. In 1961, the team won the French Cup. In spite of its triumphs, it suffered relegation to the Second Division the same year. However, it shot back to the First Division, the very next season. In 1964, Saint Etienne won the French First Division trophy. This trophy was followed by four consecutive championships between 1967 and 1970. In 1967 and 1970, two more French Cups were added to the club’s list of honors.
The club’s history during the 1970s was interspersed with more wins and honors. In 1972, Robert Herbin was hired as the Manager of the club. Under his guidance and leadership, the team won its ninth championship in 1976. The joys of the triumph were short-lived. In the same year, the club lost the European Cup to Bayern Munich. The club made up for the defeat by winning the French Cup once again in 1977. It won its last championship in 1981, its tenth First Division Championship. In 1982, the club got entangled in the throes of a financial scandal, which led to the arrest of its President Roger Rocher. The club’s performance could not retain its original quality after this incident. During the rest of the decade, it found itself taking elevator rides between the bottom half of the First Division and the Second Division. In spite of the club’s tragedy, its loss of reputation, and its poor performance, it still retained the loyal and unswerving support of its fans. In 2001, the club was struck with misfortune again. The Brazilian striker Alex and the Ukranian goal keeper Maksym Levytsky were suspended for using fake passports. Moreover, an enquiry revealed the fact that several members of the club’s management were involved in passport forgeries. The club lost points and was relegated to the Second Division. In 2004, by sheer dent of hard work, they won the Ligue 2 championship and were promoted back to Ligue 1. The club completed the season by coming sixth, which earned them the qualification to participate in the Intertoto Cup. Stade Geoffroy Guichard, the club’s home stadium, is named after Geoffroy Guichard, the founder of the Casino retail chain, who purchased the site on which it was built. At present, the ground has the capacity of holding 35,600 spectators, who can comfortably view the matches. The stadium was inaugurated on 13 September 1931. The record attendance was set when 48,842 spectators occupied the stadium to watch a match between Saint Etienne and RC Lens in May 1987. The stadium comprises four stands: Charles Paret, Jean Snella, Pierre Faurand, and Henri Point. It has been renovated several times during its history. The stadium is muti-purpose, though it is primarily used for football matches. It has a very interesting nickname “le Chaudron” (the Cauldron) or “I’enfer vert” (the Green Hell). The nicknames refer to the colors of the club. The term ‘hell’ could possibly be used with reference to the noise created by thousands of enthusiastic Saint Etienne fans.

Well Hajduk fans Torcida which I'm the member, have friendly-brotherhood relations with Magic Fans of St.Etienne and there Magic Fans paid tribute to our former president and leader Žan Ojdanić who was tragically killed few days ago when jumping with parachute. And such a things they did in the past as well, so respect Magic Fans and support Saint-Étienne..

I didn't know him but may he rest in peace :(
Btw thanks for the clearance, it's good to see that such friendships between clubs from different countries still exist today..

How about Loïc Perrin to the reserves?

368 matches and 16 seasons with the club?
