Huddersfield never used 4-3-3 during that era, they used 3-2-5 system. Btw, Richardson was a) a winger, b) only part of the 1923-24 squad and c) played only 2 matches during that season. On the other hand Clem Stephenson isn't in the best XI despite beeing probably the best player of their squad (+ second captain after Wilson).. Most representative formation for that era should look like that: GK TAYLOR CB GOODALL CB WILSON © CB WADSWORTH DMF WATSON DMF STEELE SS BROWN SS STEPHENSON RWF JACKSON LWF SMITH CF WILSON IMO one of the greatest (and most forgotten) British squads of all time.. |

Thanks! I made the changes. I always make a mess with old positions. I also got tricked by the English Wikipedia page of Richardson which says it was a midfielder. By the way do you think that he should be removed? In that case there would be too less midfielders.. And one last thing.. any suggestions for corner takers? |

Usually the corner were taken by the wingers during that era, in this case by Jackson and Smith. I wouldn't remove Richardson but would move him to the strikers section. And the reason for so "few" midfielders is simple: unlike many other British teams, Huddersfield only played with three defenders but only two midfielders (unlike most other British teams at that time), a system that Chapman succesfully also used at Arsenal in the years afterwards. And on those positions Huddersfield had Watson and Steele who both were incredibly constant. Just look at the matches from them: Steele played 88 matches (31-39-18) but the reason for this was that he missed big part of the 1925-26 season due to injuries. Watson played 123 matches and only missed three matches in those three years what is even more impressive considering the time he played.. |
