Mattea was an inside-right. He spent the majority of his career at Casale where he played from 1912 to 1915 and 1921 to 1932, for a total 241 appearances and 81 goals. He had a major role in Casale's 1913-14 Italian championship win, scoring 22 goals in 29 league games. He also played for Juventus from 1915 to 1920, and Torinese in 1920-21. He capped for Italy 5 times, scoring once.
A tall and skinny offensive player, Mattea was cunning, tricky, neat and gifted with solid pace, remarkable dribbling, technique and ability in exchanging passes. He had such a great chemistry with Gallina and Varese that he could play with them blinfolded. He was considered one of Casale's best players when it comes to positional sense and ball distribution. He was capable of eluding the defenders with his movements or provide assist with accurate through balls or lofted passes. Furthermore, he possessed speed of execution and an accurate, powerful shot. In his late career, he played more as wing-half, still showing his playmaking ability even from the back and without losing his scoring ability. It's worth of a mention that he was deployed as centre-half in the final match of the 1913-14 season to replace the captain Barbesino.
