He holds the record for most league appearances for the club with 522. Dawson was the starting goalkeeper for most of the 1910s and 1920s, a golden period for the club as they won their only FA Cup in 1914 and their first of two league titles in 1920/21. He also won 2 England caps in 1921 and 1922. Dawson was respected for his reliability and consistency, and could make excellent saves when called upon. He was praised for his confident and commanding presence despite his average build. He's also famous for a moment of sportsmanship, as before the 1914 FA Cup final he gave up his place in the team as he didn't think he would make it to the end of the game because of an injury. Burnley won the cup without him but because of his display of honesty he was also awarded with a winner's medal.
