He was limited technically, not blessed with great pace and talent but had iron will, physical strength, hard worker, good kick in both feet and excellent in aerial play, tactically on very high level and commanded his team well. Together with his brother Henk and Henk Twelker he came to Ajax in 1925. Previously he played at the age of seventeen at the Amsterdam People's Football, because those who normally was expelled because he had not paid his dues. Then he played in 't Gooi.
