Legendary German winger. Ernst was great scorer despite playing as outside right, he was also known for his excellent crosses, good set piece taker capable of scoring directly from corner, very fast with great dribbling, pretty endurable and two-footed. Lehner played as a striker for TSV Schwaben Augsburg, where he had begun eight years of age to play soccer. In 1935, he rose for the first time from the Gauliga with Schwaben Augsburg Bavaria. He remained after the descent at TSV and rose again in 1938 with his club in the Gauliga on. Schwaben Augsburg was only eleven points with Table 1939 and immediately rose again. Lehner would then move to the more successful local rivals BC Augsburg, but had to stay with the Swabians, since changing clubs were prohibited in the same place now. When he was reassigned as a soldier in 1940 to Berlin, he joined Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin. He reached the semifinals of the German football championship in 1942 and returned to Augsburg Swabia. After the war he played from 1945 to 1947 again for the Swabians in 58 games and scored 19 goals. He then moved to Viktoria Aschaffenburg that could get him a job in the urban sports office. Aschaffenburg, he played 40 league games in which he scored four goals. He was still active until the end of 1951 as player-coach. In 1952 he ended his active career and became a coach in Aschaffenburg. For the national team from 1933 to 1942, he was 65 times in use. The first time he was on 19 November 1933 situated in Zurich's 2-0 away win against Switzerland. He fell on its speed and precise edges, but came to no scoring. Nevertheless, he was called into the squad for the World Cup 1934 in Italy. There, he scored in the match for third place at 7 June 1934 in Napoli's 3-2 win over Austria's first goal, which was already after 25 seconds, when the Austrian goalkeeper Peter Platzer a shot by Matthias Heidemann could not defend properly. He scored 31 goals in his international appearances and was both the most capped player of 17 DFB October 1936 to 7 December 1941 as well as top scorer of the war. On 14 April 1940, he surpassed his 25th Goal held by Richard Hofmann record. Only on 16 November 1955 Fritz Walter was able to overtake him with 32 hits. His 31 and last goal scored on 20 September 1942 against Sweden but is attributed in some sources Karl Decker. By 6 September 2006, he was among the top 10 scorers of the team, then he fell through the gates of Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack against San Marino first back to eleventh place. Lehner was a member of the Breslau Eleven that beat Denmark in Breslau in 1937 and 8-0 in 1937 ten of the eleven internationals played victorious. His greatest sporting achievements was the third place with the German national team at the FIFA World Cup 1934 in Italy. Even at the football World Cup in France in 1938, he took part.
