INFO:

Legendary Benfica captain. Xico was actually a Porto product but at the early age he moved to fierce rivals where he became one of the greatest captains and leaders. Not the most talented but he was famous for his long throws, as well as for his energy, enthusiasm, vibrancy, nerve, impetuosity, loyalty, generosity and fighting spirit. In short it was a very headstrong athlete and excellent athleticism. Debuted among the "biggest kick the ball" by FC Porto in season 1936/37, with only 17 years and over with a victory (3-2) over Sporting in the final of the Championship of Portugal. The following season (1937/38), the 5th Day, misfortune: Defeat the SLBenfica in Amoreiras 3-1 (20 February 1938) and a broken foot in a clash with the inside-right SLBenfica, Rogério de Sousa, which forced him to 16 days of hospitalization in a Nursing Home Port. Retrieved reappears at April 10, 1938 at Camp Constitution for new clash against Benfica have been registered to a draw 2 goals that won the championship in the Lisbon's famous "Game of machine guns." He was the captain for nine seasons and SLBenfica on 293 occasions. From 1943/44, age 24, becomes captain of the 'Eagles' replacing these functions other mythical Captain: Francisco Alves Albino. From 1947 also happens to be the captain of the Portuguese national team (12 times). At its debut on National selection in Paris on January 28, 1940, as the "City of Light" was the target of Hitler, ie in absolute penury. Fearing starvation, the committee warned lusa with cod, which superiorly concocted Francisco Ferreira. After the match Italy-Portugal 1 4, held in Genoa on 27 February 1949, the president of Torino (New Commander) becomes his friend and admirer. Such that for the game in his honor, held May 3, 1949, the tri-Italian champions were the guests of honor. The SLBenfica won 4-3 but that was forever as one of the worst ever wins the "Xico" (and SLBenfica): On the plane back to Italy that followed the entourage of Torino, due to poor visibility caused by heavy fog, crashed into one of the towers of the Basilica of Turin, nestled at 600 meters high on the hill. It was the "Tragedy of Superga." The moment that erased from the map of world football and Co. Valentino Mazzola Francisco Ferreira who had been invited to travel to Italy in order to discuss their future, is devastated. Many nights spent not sleep and some time later, in an attempt to ease his pain, he decides to send the families of the deceased "50 contos" that Torino had offered him and his trophy room had put a picture of the team of Torino, framed in black. Besides the Torino also Real Madrid in 1945, offered him the opportunity to emigrate. 500 "contos" was the offering of "meringues" that still was not enough to convince him to leave his great passion: Sport Lisboa e Benfica! He died on February 14, 1986.
