Max Merkel is legendary Austrian player and more famous as coach. As a player he was a real buthcer, very tough and determinate, strong and dominant in aerial battles, even scored some goals. Max Merkel came through a newspaper advertisement for junior from SK Rapid Wien. Although he really wanted to be a striker, he was from the beginning used as a defender, he remained his entire career. After following his debut in 1937 in the first team of Hütteldorfer no longer was used, he moved first to Dornbach to Vienna Sports Club. Interrupted his football career was during the Second World War. During this time he came on 27 August 1939 as one of eight Austrian Empire under coach Sepp Herberger in the game of "Greater Germany" against Slovakia national football team use.
