INFO:
Langley was a left-back, even though he was a winger in his early years. He played for Leeds United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Queens Park Rangers among other teams. He had though the best time of his career at Fulham, where he made 356 appearances from 1957 to 1965, scoring 33 goals. He missed only one Football League game from 1958 and 1961, showing incredible form. He capped for England 3 times despite being a Second Division player.
Langley is considered by many as the pioneer of the overlapping full-back. He was known for his pace, long throw-ins ─ almost as long as corner kicks ─ that caused havoc in the box, impeccable sportsmanship and wild runs forward that were supported by a wide range of tricks. On the field, he wasn't just effective but also entertaining. His sliding tackles seemed to go on forever and his spectacular bicycle kicks to clear the ball proved his incredible acrobatic abilities. Although, he inevitably cause several fouls due do the high frequency of tackles. Also, he seemingly had troubles at covering the ground due to his short size, particularly when his opponent decided to cross the ball instead of challenging him one-on-one. Occasionally, he worried his teammates whenever he chose to manipulate the ball for too long while being pressed by the opposition close or inside the penalty area. However, his quickness and skills were enough for him to be caught out rarely. Only a few wingers could be a threat when chasing him and one of them was Chelsea's Peter Brabrook. While Langley wasn't a violent player, he didn't have a soft touch either and some opponents like Blackpool's Arthur Kaye could find themselves beyond the touchline at the end of an attack due to a Langley's trademark sliding tackle. In addition, he was a keen striker and penalty specialist.
