INFO:
Langley was a left-back − winger in his early years − who played for several clubs throughout his long career. The list includes Leeds United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Queens Park Rangers among other but he had the best time of his career at Fulham, where he played 356 matches and scored 33 goals from 1957 to 1965. He capped 3 times for England in 1958 despite playing in Second Division. Between 1958 and 1961 he missed only one Football League match, showing incredible condition.
Langley is considered by many as the pioneer of the overlapping full back. He was renowned for his pace, long throw-ins − almost as long as corner kicks − that caused havoc in the box, impeccable sportsmanship and wild runs from the defence to the attack accompanied by a wide range of tricks. On the field he wasn't just effective but also really entertaining: his sliding tackles seemed to go on forever and his spectacular bicycle kick clearances proved his incredible acrobatic abilities. Although, due do the high frequency of tackles he could cause fauls and it seems that due to his short size he had difficulties at covering, especially when an opponent decided to cross instead of challenging him. Occasionally, he made his teammates worry when he decided to manipulate the ball for too long while being pressed by opposition forwards near or inside his own penalty area but his quickness and skills were enough for him to be caught out rarely. Only a few wingers could cause him problems when chasing him and one of them was Chelsea's Peter Brabrook. Langley wasn't a violent player but his touch wasn't soft either and some opponents like Blackpool's Arthur Kaye could find themselves beyond the touchline at the end of an action due to a trademark sliding tackle from the side-back. Moreover he was a keen striker and penalty specialist.
