Aleksandar Benko was born in Čakovec(Croatia), on 16th of February 1925., and died on 25th of May 1991, in St. Gallen, Switzerland. He had a rocket shot, his powerful balls the goalkeepers often failed to even see. He was not a top technician, but he knew how to make the most of his advantages. Fast and penetrating, with a precise crosses, he brought Dinamo a lot of points and victories. Played in the left wing position. He was a striker, a strong kick player, a real shooter, fast, penetrating, selfless and an excellent free kick taker.

He start his football career in Čakovec as striker, where he played for Jedinstvo (1943-1947). Jedinstvo Čakovec was also his youth club. Then, Benko continued his career at Dinamo Zagreb, in which he spent one whole decade (1948-1958) and become club legend. Altogether, Aleksanadr Benko played 459 matches for Dinamo, which is 20th on list of highest number of games played for Dinamo, and scoring 235 goals, which is 8th on list of Dinamo all time top goal scorers. In league matches for Dinamo, benko played 159 games and scored 68 goals. With Dinamo, Benko won three Yugoslavian league titles (1948,1954,1958) and one Yugoslavian cup called “Marshall Tito cup” in 1951. He was also Yugoslavian league runner up with Dinamo in 1951 and also Yugoslavian cup runner up in 1950.

Aleksandar Benko natural position on pitch was as striker or second striker. He was one of first SFRY (Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) football players that continued his career aboard. He went to Switzerland where he played for several different clubs. Benko played for Grasshoppers (1958-59), FC Lugano (1959-60) and FC Wohlen Switerland(A) (1960-63) where he was also manager and player.

For Yugoslavian national team, Aleksandar Benko played only one game, on 30. October, 1949 in Paris against France (1:1), in qualifications for World Cup in 1950, in Brazil. He also played the only game which Croatian national team played in time in which it was part of former Yugoslavia ( 12th of September, 1956. in Zagreb against Indonesia, 5:2), when he was also captain of National team.

Aleksandar Benko died in 1991, in St. Gallen (Switzerland), and was buried in Zagreb cemetery Mirogoj, where also first Croatian president dr. Franjo Tudman is buried.
