INFO

Fritz Walter said Erwin Waldner is his successor but because of his erratic behaviour, Erwin had never made some big impact in German NT. Waldner was excellent technician with fantastic dribbling, very fast player, equally good in playmaking and scoring and had powerful shot which he dispatched from all positions. Sometimes he acted selfish in his numerous dribblings but such a gifted player Germany didn't have on too many occassions. In his first season 1952/53 Waldner attended all the games as a striker in the former championship team and had until 1960, more than 300 missions in the jersey of VfB. There he achieved in 1953 and won the runner-up in the years 1954 and 1958, twice the DFB Cup. Herbert Henzler described him as a legend in a lecture and "Superstar" at Stuttgart. Quote from an international match report: "... what he can do with the ball can not be described." As one of the first German professional footballer Erwin Waldner was abroad. From 1960 to 1961 he was with FC Zurich in Switzerland (with the late coach Kobi Kuhn), and active from 1961 to 1963 for the team of SPAL Ferrara, Italy (18 missions and two goals in Serie A). 1963 Waldner went back to the founding of the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart, where he was active until 1967 and came to 63 Premier League matches and twelve gates. His former coach Rudi Gutendorf described him in a television interview as a "world class player." As an amateur he was later on for the FV Ebingen. In the German national team, Erwin Waldner played 13 times and scored twice. He was almost 13 years younger than Fritz Walter and suitable for the position of playmaker. In the match against Russia in Düsseldorf 1956 (1:2), he was game to eyewitnesses and "best man on the pitch". Sepp Herberger, but did not stick to him, although he, according to opinion of soccer experts "in his day was the best player at his position (far right) in Germany" (DFB journal to match Germany - Ireland in Stuttgart 2006). Once it became Germany coach Helmut Schön 1964, he was awarded for their outstanding performances in the Bundesliga again the offer to play in the national team. Waldner refused because he finished this chapter to be considered. Erwin died in 2015.

RIP Erwin :(

This often (unfairly) forgotten player was certainly one of the most talented and technically gifted players in Germany throughout the 50's and 60's..
