INFO:

Heinz Kwiatkowski is former German keeper and Borussia Dortmund legend. As a goalkeeper, Kwiatkowski's specialty was to fist the ball away, which earned him the nickname "Heini Fausten". Despite being a keeper with good positioning, jumping and speed, he was most known unfortunately for standing on the goal at some of the most humiliating defeats in German history like 3-8 against Hungary on WC '54 and 3-6 against France on WC '58. A native of Gelsenkirchen, home of FC Schalke 04, Heinrich Kwiatkowski enjoyed his greatest successes with fierce rivals Borussia Dortmund when he won two back-to-back German championships in 1956 and 1957 and was their captain in the 1961 German championship final which they lost to Nürnberg. He was less lucky playing for Germany, in the four caps he collected he was beaten 14 times, among it the 3-8 vs. Hungary in 1954 and the 3-6 vs. France in 1958. As Fritz Walter stated later “during the 1954 World Cup the only player I felt real pity for was Kwiatkowski”. At the same time he considered himself lucky because he almost drowned while swimming in a lake in Thun. Upon his return to Dortmundn the municipal public bath gave him a coupon for free swimming lessons. From a footballing point of view Kwiatkowski has to be counted among the very best German keepers of his generation and was considered an equal talent to the 1954 World Cup winning goalkeeper Toni Turek. A cool-headed personality, in more than 1,200 games he earned himself the nickname “Heini fist it!” as his specialty was forceful and firm fisting of the ball. Altogether his 409 games in the preBundesliga “Oberliga” are second only to Max Morlock. He was with Borussia in 1956, 1957 and 1963 German Champion, 1965 DFB Cup winners and 1966 European Cup Winners' Cup winner. He played 1954-1958 four times for the German national football team. The highlight of his career was the World Cup in Switzerland, where he was with the German national team won the World Cup (use as a debutant in the 3:8 defeat by Hungary in the preliminary round of the 1954 World Cup). Later he took part in the Football World Cup 1958 in Sweden. Again, he came again in a relatively meaningless game used the match for third place against France. Kwiatkowski refused in 1954 as the only players of the German World Cup squad, the notorious vitamin injections. He finished 1966, his career as a player. On 23 May 2008, he died in St. Joseph nursing home in Dortmund, Derne a serious illness.
