INFO:

Hans Schäfer was brillant striker, good playmaker and with 501 goals in 711 games for Koln excellent scorer. He played as inside left and left winger. Player with good speed, crosses but also great ground passes and heading. He was most known and feared for his ferocious shot. Schafer was real leader on the pitch with good running abilities, coming back to help in playmaking and had solid strength and dribbling. Although Schäfer spent the first half of his career as an outside left, he was by no means a ‘classic’ left winger who would be seen dribbling and crossing all of the time. While he could do that fairly good, his style was more that of a committed, very dynamic, physically strong winger who often would drift infield instead of crossing near the touchline. Due to his never tiring ways, the robust yet charismatic Schäfer was the centrepiece of Köln from the early-1950s until his retirement in 1965 aged 37. Schäfer and Jupp Röhrig formed a tandem with the creative playmaker type Röhrig as the provider an Schäfer as the finisher. By the late-1950s Hans Schäfer had moved from the wing to the inside left position himself, a move which he also repeated when playing for Germany. Schäfer was very strong in one-on-one situations which he showed in the 1954 World Cup final against Hungary when he took the ball off Josef Bozsik and subsequently crossed the ball to Helmut Rahn who scored the 3-2. Horst Eckel, his teammate in the national team, said of Schäfer: “playing against Hans was like a punishment, he never gave up on a ball, was always totally committed and always at the centre of things.” In 1957 Schäfer became captain of the German national team, succeeding Fritz Walter. By the early-1960s, with Jupp Röhrig retired, Schäfer had become the playmaker of Köln yet he didn’t manage to become the conductor of the national team in the same way. His last World Cup tournament in 1962 must be considered a disappointment. But he came back in force the next year when he was voted ‘German Footballer of the year’ at the age of 35. Throughout his career, Hans Schäfer was a very dangerous marksman and the top goalgetter in the history of Oberliga West. The final breakthrough into the top class of German football Cologne managed by his debut in the senior team on 9 November 1952, be twice enforcement in the scoring charts in the Oberliga West in 1953 and 1954 with both 26 goals and his no doubt contributing to the surprising win the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, when he scored in five appearances four goals. In 1962 Cologne was successful but the great success. They took the final win with a comfortable 4-0 beyond 1 FC Nuremberg for the first time the championship trophy in the cathedral city. As to the other World Cup-day in Chile with his personally unfamiliar defensive role, the sensational defeat of 1:8 on 5 September 1962 in the European Champions Cup at the Scottish champions FC Dundee and the 1-3 final defeat on 29 June 1963 in the last final of the German Championship could not be classified in the other hand. However, this is again very clearly to the success of the first FC Cologne in the first round of Bundesliga 1963/64. With coach George Knöpfle took in 1964 with his teammates the second German Cup in Cologne. In 22 league games the veteran had scored to win the title twelve goals. With his appearance on 15 May 1965, in a 2-2 away draw at Borussia Dortmund, completed the 37-year-old player's active career. Of 28 November 1964 to 27 March 1965 he fell from a lengthy injury in the season and this did not at the three legendary European Cup games in February and March 1965 involved against Liverpool. As the defending champion Germany 1958 at the World Cup in Sweden finished in fourth place, was in all six games of the DFB-Elf in action, scoring three goals. After an almost three-year break, the veteran returned on 11 April 1962, the last international match before the World Cup tournament in Chile in 1962, back in Hamburg against Uruguay in the national team. In South America, he led the Herberger team as captain in all four World Cup games against Italy, Switzerland, Chile and Yugoslavia on the field. After his 39th Match, the 0-1 defeat on 10 June in Santiago against Yugoslavia, he put an end to his ten-year career in the national team. He passed away in 2017.
