INFO

Erich Retter was very good player but so unlucky with the injuries which even prevented him of becoming the World Champion in 1954, since he, as a regular starter for German NT, got injured just couple of weeks before the start of WC. And Werner Liebrich got the chance and glory instead of him. As a player Retter was most known for his versatility, he could play as defender and wing half, with good build up play, strong in heading, had good speed, ball control and strength. Besides he was good in starting the attacks from the back line, very rare made a mistakes and had good understanding with his teammates. With Stuttgart in the years 1950 and 1952 under coach George Wurzer won the German championship. Also lost in the finals in 1953 he defended the "Reds". A third title he won in 1954 by the success in the DFB Cup. Played in the Oberliga Süd savior for VfB Stuttgart 354 games and scored six goals. National coach Sepp Herberger tested him for the first time internationally in 1951 in a B international. His debut in the senior team played savior on 20 April 1952 in a 2-0 victory in Luxembourg and was then the root formation of the national team. In season 1953/54 he was in all the five matches before the World Cup in Switzerland in 1954 in the team of Sepp Herberger. In his twelfth international match (5-3 win against Switzerland in Basel on 25 April 1954), he suffered a meniscus injury that forced him to abandon the World Cup finals. At its 13th International duty, he only came on 28 May 1955 in Hamburg's 2-1 against Ireland. At 1:3 against England on 26 Denied May 1956 in Berlin, Erich Retter his 14th and last international game. After a second meniscus surgery in 1958, his career with VfB Stuttgart also tended to a close. Erich died in 2014.
