INFO:
Hubbard was a left-winger. His career started in 1947 in his native country South Africa where he played for Berea Park, Arcadia Shepherds, and Pretoria Municipals. He travelled to Scotland in 1949, signing for Rangers where he made 238 appearances and scored 103 goals until he left in 1959. He earned his place as starter in the first team in 1955. The same year, he played four matches for the Scottish League XI (he couldn't represent Scotland), facing Northern Ireland, England, Denmark and Ireland. During his time with Rangers, he became the first African to play in the European Cup. He's also remembered for his hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Celtic in 1955. He retired in 1964 after spending three good seasons at Bury and two at Ayr United. He capped once for South Africa in a 1956 friendly match against Great Britain. In that match, he scored one goal from penalty.
Considered one of the best wingers South Africa has ever produced, Hubbard was a right-footed left-winger distinguished by skill, speed, eye for goal, crossing ability and an unmatched accuracy from penalty. During his trial with Rangers, he immediately proved that he was elegant, balanced, skilled on the ball and an excellent corner taker. He created numerous scoring changes with his pinpoint crosses, especially for Northern Irish striker Billy Simpson. But Hubbard scored as well when required as he could target the goal with spectacular shots and wasn't easily pushed off despite his slight physique. His ability from the spot was his trademark, though. He scored 65 penalties out of 68, and 22 of them were consecutive. He used to run up nearly straight to the ball and he would either put it in the keeper's top right corner or, more rarely, in the top left. If he saw the keeper moving, Hubbard would change his mind. If the pitch was muddy, he would shoot the ball low.
