Petagna was a half-back and inside forward. His career started at Arsenaltaranto, where he made 120 appearances and scored 36 goals from 1942 to 1949. He eventually had his most successful time at Triestina, scoring 13 goals in 281 matches from 1949 to 1959. A good scorer during his time at Arsenaltaranto, Petagna became much less prolific with Triestina, scoring almost all his goals in his first five years. The reason was his inclination to build up the play, which he did with excellence. He was consistent and possessed good technical qualities, notable physical attributes, a dangerous long range shot when he decided to be an additional striker. He was also a good free kick taker. However, he most of the times preferred finding a solution that better suited his teammates. He ran a lot and played with remarkable composure and tactical awareness, but even when he looked tired, his efficiency didn't decrease. In fact, he was even more efficient when the match got heated and lively.
