Hughes was a centre-half, capable of playing as wing-half. He spent his entire career at Liverpool, making 326 appearances from 1946 to 1957, scoring once. He capped for England in 3 occasions in 1950. An inside forward in his youth career, Hughes initially possessed good skills on the ground that he mostly lost after being turned into a defender as he grew taller. He became a commanding, smart and uncompromising defender, considered strong as an ox. He was distinguished for his great positional sense and game reading which were second to none, as well as the ability to stop his opponent before his move could cause any problem. He was dominant in the air and in possession of a magnificent heading, although his only goal came with a shot at the 88 minute of a match against Preston North End in 1951.
