INFO:
Lawler was a left-back or left-half who could play also on the right side. His career began in 1945. He played in Ireland for Drumcondra and Belfast Celtic. In 1949 he transferred to England, playing for Fulham − mostly in Second Division − until his retirement in 1962: 299 matches and no goals scored. He capped 8 times for Ireland.
Lawler was a very offensive full-back despite not having scored. He was a stylish player, far more constructive than defenders usually were back then. He liked supporting the forwards, acting almost as an additional striker alongside Gordon Brice. Their inclination to turn attack into defence was often a weakness for Fulham. However they both did everything they could to stop the opposing centre forward. Lawler was in fact a no-nonsense player, hard, solid, stoic, reliable, not overly fast but with a great presence in the air. Unfortunately, he didn't have a great deal of pace but he was skillful. He was a very stable kind of character and he rarely put a foot wrong. His main quality though was his extremely long throwing ability: the opponents feared his long throws because they were like a fast cross coming in the box. Outside of the field, Lawler was a master at inventing nicknames, even for a legend like Johnny Haynes.
