Defence MindedINFO:Carantini was a centre back, sweeper and half-back. His career began in 1954 at Hellas Verona: only 5 matches in three seasons. In 1957 he transferred to Venezia where he was a first choice for six seasons, playing 163 matches until 1963. At one point he was about to join Juventus but instead he was bought by Vicenza and the last nine seasons of his career have probably been the best: 248 matches for Lanerossi until his retirement in 1972. He was really bound to Vicenza and that has been confirmed also by Luigi Menti, who told in an interview after the decease of Carantini in 2013: << we were winning 1-0 against Cagliari, when I committed a faul in the midfield and from the free kick, Cagliari scored the 1-1; he was so angry that in the locker room he gave me a kick to the butt >>.
Carantini was an implacable man-marker, tight at the ankle of his opponents. He was an inexhaustible weir alongside his teammate Mario Calosi during his time at Vicenza. He was a rough and energic fighter, who never left the marked striker alone, at the cost of going crazy if necessary. Not too fast, he rather used strength and interception with the head if possible to stop the attackers. He had to mark legends like Gigi Riva, Omar Sívori and José Altafini, sometimes with cleverness, sometimes with roughness but he received only one red cards in his career. He wasn't really good at using the feet to kick the ball, sometimes pushed too near or simply at random. He never scored a goal but he scored an own-goal that he always remembered with a smile.
