He was an excellent right back, very composed and calm, tough when defending but with good skill with the ball too. His long passes were always accurate, and his first touch was very good under pressure which allowed him to play his way out of trouble instead of just kicking the ball far away. He wasn't so quick or agile but with his positioning and tackling skills he could lock down his wing, even against fast opponents. Angus was very unlucky to only win a single cap for England, at his weaker position of left back. His peak overlapped with the careers of Jimmy Armfield and later George Cohen, and while he was a very solid defender he wasn't well suited to attacking like the other two. But for Burnley he was a consistent, crucial part of a title winning team. |
