INFO:

One of the best Rangers defenders. Ronnie McKinnon was virtually ever present for the Gers during the 60s, nobody played more games for them during that decade. Ronnie was a centre back known for his calm demeanour, good aerial ability and exceptional pace for a defender, Jimmy Greaves called him the fastest defender he ever faced. McKinnon's complete defensive ability and consistency were such that he kept Billy McNeill out of the Scotland team when they were both at their peak in the mid to late 60s. His calmness and precision made him extremely reliable, no matter the opponent. Although he had a slim build, he was deceptively strong, and despite his height he had a very good leap, which further added to his strength in the air. He mostly stayed back in defence, just doing his job without taking any risks. He wasn't known for being a technical player but he was almost never caught on the ball because he knew exactly when to play a safe pass or when to just kick the ball right into the crowd. He also had decent control that enhanced his security on the ball. On top of all this he rarely missed a match. In the nine seasons from 1962/63 to 1970/71, he only missed 20 league games, and in 10 years in the first team he amassed 487 games in all competitions. Unfortunately in November 1971 he broke his leg in a match against Sporting CP and never played again. This was especially harsh as it meant he missed out on Rangers' triumph in the same competition he suffered his injury. Overall, Ronnie was an excellent defender and ranks very highly on the list of great Scottish defenders.
