INFOS:

John Hughes, known to most as Yogi due to his bear-like size, was a long time Celtic player, a regular for the entirety of the 60s. He could play on both wings and at centre forward but his main position was at left wing. There he became known for his powerful runs from deep positions with the ball at his feet, beating several people at a time as he would bulldoze through defenders. While he wasn't the most agile or quick off the mark, or even the most technical, his physicality made him virtually impossible to stop once he got going. He combined this with a good, powerful shot to score almost 200 goals for Celtic, only 7 players have scored more goals for the club. He was also known for his stamina and ability to play in tough conditions, and took corners at times. Unfortunately his style of play meant that he was an inconsistent player and on his bad days he was very frustrating and a liability. His goalscoring was quite irregular over the years, he scored lots of goals in the early 60s as a young striker (enough to attract the attention of Juventus, who considered him as a replacement for John Charles), then transitioned to the wing and had seasons where he would score 20 goals but also seasons where he would only score 10. He also missed out on the European Cup final in 1967 because of an injury, although he started in the final in 1970. Still he was a very good player and had an excellent scoring record. Unfortunately he had a bad relationship with Jock Stein that led to him being sent away to Crystal Palace in 1971, where despite coming 2nd in the goal of the season award, his career started to decline. He joined Sunderland in 1973 but injured himself 15 minutes into his debut and never played again, retiring at age 30. In his prime Hughes was one of the most spectacular players in Celtic's history, very few players for the club have combined such physicality and technique. Although not without his flaws, his unique talents are still greatly admired by fans.
